The European Language Certificates
The TELC international language exams do not deal only with grammar. There are not classical tests that require detailed knowledge of grammar rules, literature, historical or geographical facts. Instead, the ability to communicate at a certain level is evaluated according to the Common European Framework.
Candidates have to show that they are able to understand and react according to their level and this requires using all the four language skills
Exams have these parts (slightly different in details – according to the level):
1) Reading comprehension
Usually consists of several texts of different length. Some of them require only global understanding (topic, basic facts), some require detailed comprehension.
2) Listening comprehension
Similar to reading comprehension, several texts of different length, global and detailed understanding.
3) Grammar structures
Candidates have one or more texts (usually a letter) in which words are missing (prepositions, verb forms, etc.). Candidates choose from a multiple choice.
4) Writing
Candidates write a personal or business letter or e-mail (the correct form is evaluated – greeting, introduction, conclusion) in which they have to react to a plea or a request (e.g. write to a language school and ask for more information about the types and prices of courses).
5) Oral exam
Usually takes place on a different day than the written part. Only those who have passed the writing part can take the oral exam. Candidates introduce themselves and discuss a given topic (arrange an appointment, compare statistics, describe pictures) with their partner (usually one of the examiners). Both fluency and accuracy of the candidate's performance are evaluated together with candidate's ability to present their opinions, persuade, disagree, etc.
