The differences between a seminar and a traditional language lesson

There are many aspects which make seminars different from standard language lessons. Students learn phrases necessary for a particular skill, but that is only one part of the seminar. Another important aspect is that students learn to formulate their thoughts in English, which can be a very different process in a foreign language due to cultural differences. An English or American team leader will expect a different approach and consequently different expressions to a Czech one.

Students do not learn empty phrases. Instead, they learn to understand their meaning with respect to the culture behind a different language. For example, in the Czech Republic, it is important to address people with their academic titles or degrees, such as “pane řediteli“. Addressing someone ‘Mr Director’ or using an academic title might seem funny or too formal to English-speaking people.

The seminars help a participant to understand these differences and to use the language appropriate for the situation. The seminars develop a student’s ability to do this by targeting specific business skills.
